FirstClass Client vs. Web Portal

Students,
If you are attempting to use FirstClass either on campus or off campus, use the client software instead of the web portal. You will have fewer problems using the FirstClass client. Download the client and install it on your home computer. The client will serve you much better in the long run.

In addition, we have noticed that students will use the FirstClass web login in the labs as well. The client is installed on the lab computers and is in your Dock. Please use the client whenever possible. Only use the web portal if you are away from your computer (or in another country).

I received an email from Diane Lanevi about this company. Josh Sommer just met with them and they will be making the Chordoma Foundation part of their beneficiaries. Think about donating your games to this company to help fund research into Chordoma.

Forum Digests Got You Down?

If you are getting too many digests from forums in Moodle, read on... Any forum in a Moodle course has a subscription. If you are subscribed, you get emails. To unsubscribe go to the forum and look for the Unsubscribe from Forum link. Teachers can make forums so you can not Unsubscribe!

You can NOT unsubscribe from the Course News Forum which is only used by teachers to post News.

Get OpenOffice for all your word processing + needs

All new computers do not come Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, or some other proprietary software unless you pay anywhere from $79.00 (iWork '09) or $149.00 (Office Education Discount). This may be out of reach for some so we suggest you try OpenOffice. It is open source and version 3.0 has all of the tools you will need. Cost - well it is like Moodle, supported by groups of people who release the code for free. Available for most current operating systems.

Capture Class Content in a Forum

I have noticed that many students create great class content that is never fully taken advantage of by the teacher or classmates. I think a great way to use forums is to have students post class notes that they take in class or post links to resources they make for your class. For instance, many students use Quizlet or Quizimodo to make study cards. Have them share the link for all classmates. Some students make other study guides, harness this work for your course as it is good content. Many hands make light work or it takes a learning village..
